Step One

I hate this.

I signed up to run the Chicago Marathon in October several months ago. At the time, I was still 6ish months post having run the Rome Marathon. So, while not in fabulous shape, I still had a mindset of “no problem!” Call that mistake number one.

Fast forward one really crappy Chicago winter. One really crappy Chicago spring. Lots of excuses for not working out that I could attribute to my book launch. 42 boxes of Thin Mints. A new ritual with Drew of making mint chocolate chip shakes every night.

And here I am three months before the marathon. Ten pounds heavier than I want to be. Legs that feel like they have boat anchors attached to them. A still, unflexible body.

So what do I do? I start. I just start.

I ran thirty minutes this morning. That’s my starting point. Get out there and do it. Me and my favorite Carrie Underwood songs.

Lord knows I have a long, long way to go. But I took the first step today.

And feel pretty dandy.
