DIY Dad Moments: Crafts for Kids

I had a lot of fun on Good Day Chicago on Fox TV – hanging out with Corey McPherrin, The theme of the segment was quick and easy crafts and games that dads can make with supplies from the local hardware store. I’m all about grabbing easy moments with the kids – so I hope the notes below help inspire you to try a thing or two with your own kids!  (at the bottom of this page you’ll find individual photos with notes)

MASKING TAPE FUN

Give your kids some masking tape and let them make some games right on your carpeting. Try tic tac toe with game pieces made from PVC. Or set up a modified bullseye / Boce at the end of your hallway. The kids will stay busy for hours!

SPIDER CATCH

Set this up in a doorway or opening. Using painters’ tape create a “spider web.” Then crumble up pieces of newspaper (these are the “spiders”) and see how many you can  successful “catch” in the spider web by tossing them into the web.

FLOWER POT WITH BLOOMING “SCREWS”

Paint a pine board a bright color. Then add on a flower pot with stems. Next, pre-drill a bunch of holes which your child will then use when they screw in a TON of screws. Remember to use safety goggles. Once all the screws are in, have your kid paint the tops of the screws with colorful paint.

BRACELETS WITH DRYER HOSE CLAMPS

Adjust a dryer hose clamp to the perfect size to fit your child then wrap it in the yarn of their choice!

RING TOSS ON THE WALL

Use some of those removable hooks (the larger ones work best) and make a ring toss game on your wall. Make soft rings with rope.

BACKYARD KIDS’ OASIS

Attach two cotton shower curtains with hooks to a Hula Hoop and hang from a backyard tree. Add a few blankets and pillows and your kids will enjoy a secret getaway all summer long!
